How I Used French Classes To Become Bilingual

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Of course, I was taught French during my school days but never took it seriously. As far as I was concerned, it wasn’t important to me and never would be.

Turns out I was wrong about that.

I was sent to France for work; I found myself wishing Id paid attention in my French classes. Its not that easy to find someone in France who speaks English fluently, it turns out. You’d have better luck finding a Finnish speaker in Portugal (well, almost).

Whew, I really felt lost. Nonetheless, I made a silent resolve not to learn the language, since I wasn’t going to be coming back to France.

But on getting back home, my boss told me I would be going back in 3 months. This time I would stay longer. There and then I made a commitment to myself to learn French before the 3 months was up.

Now, I prefer audio books, since I can listen to them when my hands are occupied. I bought a complete French audio class and started listening to them whenever possible: on the train, at home and even while jogging!

It took me a little while to start catching on to what the audio lessons were trying to tell me, but after a couple of weeks it started to click. The thing which really worked for me where the English translations of the spoken passages in French.

Little by little, I started picking up the language. About 6 weeks later I found that I could speak French passably; I even had a brief conversation in French with my boss and managed not to lapse into English at any point. I think I surprised her there!

She asked how Id done it; I explained that Id been using audio books in my effort to learn the language. She was very impressed with my initiative and made me the head of the company delegation for the French trip! She told the rest of the group to pick up the same audio lessons Id used and start studying as I had.

When I made that return trip to France, I had a much better time. I could communicate with people ” and Id learned it all on my own! I didn’t take a single class, I didn’t have to hire a tutor and I didn’t even crack open any French tutorial books!

In just three months, Id managed to learn a good amount of French using these audio lessons. Best of all, I did it by studying in my own free time. I didn’t have to set any special time aside to learn French, I listened to the audio books while I was doing other things.

If I could do this within 3 months, I am certain anyone else can do it too. If there is any language you would love to learn, follow my footsteps and you will be pleasantly surprised what can happen in just 3 months, with the power of audio books.

Boys Clothing Can be Just as Fashionable as Girls

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Early in the 20th century little boys were dressed up just as much as little girls were. Believe it or not, in the early 1900’s it was not uncommon to find baby boys in dresses. They were wearing silk and lace, along with a sailor outfit here and there. Somewhere in the middle of the century, boys clothing got less formal and just plain bleak.

Boys went from dresses to jeans, khakis, t-shirts, and baseball caps. Mothers-to-be were wishing for little girls so they could have options to dress their babies up. The common thought was, “Dressing boys is no fun.”

Boys clothing used to be made in simple fabrics with very limited color schemes. Finding anything cute or out of the ordinary was a very difficult task. We may not put boys in dresses or pigtails anymore, but the options available to them have come a very long way in the last decade.

Now boys can be just as fashionable as girls. In general, kids are becoming independent thinkers very early on. Regular department stores like Target and Sears aren’t the only ones paying attention. Long gone are the days when shopping for a boy was no fun.

Boys don’t have to be part of a sports team to wear jerseys and other athletic wear anymore. Walk into any store and you will find sport inspired hoodies, t-shirts, and even casual polo shirts. Whether your boy just likes the feel and style, or is a diehard fan of a team, the options are nearly endless. Expectant parents can even find sports inspired newborn clothing.

Not only has fashionable clothing become popular for boys, but now they also have shoes and accessories available to them.

Department stores, chain shoe stores and online stores are also carrying a large range of fashionable shoes. Whether your boy likes casual shoes, boots and skating (skateboarding) shoes, there should be no shortage of styles and companies to pick from at the local mall or on the Internet.

Whether you have a rocker, athlete, or casual boy, he has as many style choices as young girls. Boys can still dress down and dirty in their t-shirts, jeans, and baseball caps, but at least now they have a choice in the matter.

6 Easy Steps To Your Essay Structure

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Once you know how to structure your essay, you should be able to advance a great deal in academia. Students who know how to structure an essay will be able to make a better impact on their reader and allow them to understand an essay more clearly.

If you are new to academic writing, then you may be unfamiliar with the structure of an essay at university. You will probably have spent a few hours or so trying to get used to writing essays at college, yet these will be considerably different to what you will do at this higher level.

No doubt you will want to get the best possible grades for your essays whilst at university. You will probably want to ensure that you are structuring your written work in an effective way to make sure you are receiving the top marks for the work that you are submitting. Also, you will want to make sure that your work is cohesive and works throughout to ensure you’re getting the very best grades.

Step1. You should begin to organize yourself as this will help in the structure of your essays and getting your thoughts, desk and any materials you use, into order will surely help you organize your work much better. You should close down any unnecessary programs on your computer that are not helping you with your productivity. You should also have a notepad on your desk to write down any points that you need to cover next, but may forget whilst you cover and complete the current task.

Step 2. Be informed - Many people seem to think that they can look at a computer screen, type a few thousands words and hey presto you have an essay! Well, probably it would be an essay in an ideal world, but let me tell you that the world is far from ideal and in order to sound credible to anyone who is going to read your work, you need to be able to understand all of the material that you need to source, read and digest. If you havent got around to this stage yet, then feel free to go and learn about the subject you want to write, even if this is only an introduction.

Step 3. What, How and Why? - You should also be thinking about when, where and who - these are termed as the seven honest serving men and will get you through your academic life. You are not just going to structure your essay around a topic and throw all the information you have learned about it on to paper and submit that as an essay. Your lecturer/professor will be looking for your critical evaluation and thought process and want you to be constantly asking, well why is that, or how is that, or why did that happen, etc. You can also structure your answers this way.

You should also think about what the different parts are going to be and how you see them being set out. By explaining this to the reader, you will be able to drop in signposts that will make them feel easier and understand where the paper is leading them.

By answering specific areas of your essay and guiding your reader through your paper, you will be able to concentrate on some of the arguments that have stood out in other academics’ works.

Step 4. Choose the direction - when you set out the structure of your essay, you will want to make sure that you have total control of where you want to go and what you will do on the way to getting there. The essay will simply guide your reader along this path and allow them to understand that you can present a well-written, structured and coherent essay that is worth the mark that it deserves. You will want to make sure then, that the different steps that you have taken to secure the foundations of the essay will be string enough to hold the weight of your arguments and direction.

Step 5. Write it right - you will want to make sure that when you get down to the writing stage that you will have a robust structure that is stable enough to allow the reader to identify the start, middle and the end of your essay. Every stage (or part of your essay should have an introduction, a middle explanation part, and an end to summarize the key points. Whilst this isn’t going to be static structure with headings and subheadings, you should be able to recognize the structure when you read it.

Step 6. Be Prepared - preparation is one of the most important things to have when writing an essay or paper in the academic arena. You will want to have a plan of what you are wanting to write. Some students find it easier to map out their essay in preparation for actually writing their paper, getting themselves mentally prepared for the writing and thoughts ahead. Keep in mind that certain bits of information belong it certain parts of the paper, don’t leave your reader second guessing your argument or wondering what the argument of the paper was about.

Once you have completed your essay it will be a good decision to have your essay proofread by an editor to check it for style, structure and a cohesive argument. Doing so will mean that you will be able to understand where you have gone wrong in writing your essay paper.
